To figure out this, we need to know SX1278/SX1276 chips at first, they are long range, low-power wireless transceiver chips produced by Semtech, which are high-performance wireless transceivers for the IoT use. They can achieve a sensitivity of over -148dBm using a low cost crystal and bill of materials. The high sensitivity combined with the integrated +20dBm power amplifier yields industry leading link budget making it optimal for any application requiring range or robustness. The SX1278/SX1276 based wireless modules feature the LoRa® long range modem that provides ultra-long range spread spectrum communication and high interference immunity whilst minimizing current consumption. The wireless modules designed based on SX1278 and SX1276 chips has the advantages of long transmission distance and strong anti-jamming ability, so it is widely used in various fields and has attracted much attention from the market.

Actually, the performance of the two chips are almost the same, and the packaging is the same (both 6x6mm and QFN-28); there are only two different pins, the 21th and 22nd feet of SX1278 are GND, while the 21th foot of SX1276 is RFI_HF, foot is 22 RFO_HF.

So what's the difference between the two modules? In fact, the main difference is in the frequency of the chip and the region targeted:

1.  The frequency of the SX1278 wireless module is 433 MHz and 470 MHz, mainly for China, Southeast Asia, South America and Eastern Europe.

2.  The frequency of the SX1276 wireless module is 868MHz and 915MHz, mainly for Europe and North America.
